Pure..., pure devotion means śravaṇaṁ kīrtanam. [break]

This is pure devotion.

Therefore pure devotion is,

Anyone who has got unalloyed bhakti, devotion... Akiñcanā means without any material desire. That is not pure devotion. That is adulterated. That is also devotion, but it is adulterated. Pure devotion means without any material desire. That is pure devotion.

Bhāgavata: So when one follows the nine activities of devotion purely, that is pure bhakti.

Prabhupāda: No, it is not wrong, but it is not pure devotion.

Not devotion for some purpose. That is not pure devotee. If you have got some purpose to... But that is not pure. Pure devotee never asks anything from the Lord. That is pure devotion.

Pradyumna: [reading] "4) Pure devotional service is rarely achieved. 5) Those in pure devotional service

"Pure devotional service is rarely achieved." That is the criterion. Pure devotional service has got so many advantages, but it is very difficult. It is very difficult. Pure devotional service, even after endeavoring for millions and millions of births, it is very difficult Pure devotional service can be achieved only through the mercy of a pure devotee.

"Those in pure devotional service deride even the conception of liberation. [microphone feedback] 6) Pure devotional service is the only means to attract Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is all-attractive, but pure devotional service attracts even Him. This means that pure devotional service is even transcendentally stronger than Kṛṣṇa Himself, because

This is pure prayer. So pure devotional service is another great science. One has to learn it.

Therefore pure devotion means anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam [Brs. 1.1.11]. Pure devotion means one should be freed from all material desires, even from the desire of being elevated So they are not pure devotion. They are karma-kāṇḍa, jñāna-kāṇḍa.

Prabhupāda: Yes, pure devotee is anyone who has no other motive except to serve Kṛṣṇa. If he has got some motive, then he's not pure devotee. He may be not advanced, but if he has not motive, then he's pure devotee. If he wants to utilize Kṛṣṇa for his personal benefit, then he's not pure devotee. He's impure. So first of all he has to become pure devotee. [end]

Pure devotional service is the only means to attract Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is all-attractive, but pure devotional service attracts even Him. This means that pure devotional service is even transcendentally stronger than Kṛṣṇa Himself, because

He could ask any material benediction from Lord Nṛsiṁha-deva, but this is not pure devotee. They were pure devotees. By worshiping Lord, one should not ask for any material benediction. That is not pure devotion. Pure devotion means anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam [Brs. 1.1.11], no material desire, anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyaṁ jñāna-karmādy-anāvṛtam

THE RARENESS OF PURE DEVOTIONAL SERVICE

People do not wish to come to the pure devotional service. That is the beginning of pure devotional service. No other engagement. Simply Kṛṣṇa. That is pure devotional service. But that is very difficult to achieve.

This chapter is "Characteristics of Pure Devotional Service." Pure devotional service should be without any desire, anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam [Brs. 1.1.11]. That is pure devotion.

But a pure devotee does not accept even all these liberation. They don't ask for liberation. Pure devotee is satisfied only with the service of the Lord. That is pure devotion.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta kar says except pure devotee, who only wants to satisfy Kṛṣṇa, everyone is working But Kṛṣṇa says, "Pure devotional service..." Not... Rūpa Gosvāmī says, "Pure devotional service is the only means to attract Kṛṣṇa." Hmm. Now...
